Aldo-keto reductase (AKR) superfamily; Aldo-keto reductases (AKRs) are a superfamily of soluble NAD(P)(H) oxidoreductases whose chief purpose is to reduce aldehydes and ketones to primary and secondary alcohols. AKRs are present in all phyla and are of importance in both health and industrial applications. Members have very distinct functions and include the prokaryotic 2,5-diketo-D-gluconic acid reductases and beta-keto ester reductases, the eukaryotic aldose reductases, aldehyde reductases, hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, steroid 5beta-reductases, potassium channel beta-subunits, and aflatoxin aldehyde reductases, among others.

AKR2E family of aldo-keto reductase (AKR); Bombyx mori 3-dehydroecdysone reductase is a founding member of aldo-keto reductase family 2 member E4 (AKR2E4). It is a NADP-dependent oxidoreductase with high 3-dehydroecdysone reductase activity. It may play a role in the regulation of molting and has lower activity with phenylglyoxal and isatin (in vitro). This family also includes 3-dehydroecdysone 3b-reductase from Spodoptera littoralis and Trichoplusia ni, DL-glyceraldehyde reductase from Drosophila melanogaster, aldo-keto reductase from Bombyx mori, which correspond to aldo-keto reductase family 2 member E1, E2, E3 and E5 (AKR2E1/2/3/5), respectively.

PLD (EC1.1.1.107) catalyzes irreversible oxidation of pyridoxal. FDH(EC1.1.1.122), also called (2S,3R)-aldose dehydrogenase, or L-fucose dehydrogenase, catalyzes the oxidation of L-fucose to L-fuconolactone in the presence of NADP(+). It is also active against L-galactose, and to a much lesser degree, D-arabinose.
