Tau and MAP protein, tubulin-binding repeat; This family includes the vertebrate proteins MAP2, MAP4 and Tau, as well as other animal homologs. MAP4 is present in many tissues but is usually absent from neurons; MAP2 and Tau are mainly neuronal. Members of this family have the ability to bind to and stabilize microtubules. As a result, they are involved in neuronal migration, supporting dendrite elongation, and regulating microtubules during mitotic metaphase. Note that Tau is involved in neurofibrillary tangle formation in Alzheimer's disease and some other dementias. This family features a C-terminal microtubule binding repeat that contains a conserved KXGS motif.
