Methanococci & Methanothermea
From a nomenclatural standpoint, Methanococci Boone 2002 may be considered a junior homotypic synonym of Methanothermea Cavalier-Smith 2002, as both have the type order Methanococcales. However, Cavalier-Smith includes the Methanosarcinales in the class Halobacteria. In contrast, Boone includes the Methanosarcinales in the class Methanococci. Neither circumscription is consistent with unpublished analyses of complete genome data (C. Woese, personal communication). In version 4.0 of the BMSB Taxonomic Outline, the class 'Methanobicrobia' was created to include the orders Methanomicrobiales and Methanosaricnales.
