Iodate reduction by dissimilatory iodate-reducing microorganisms (DIRM) plays a crucial role in the biogeochemical cycling of iodine on Earth. However, the occurrence of DIRM in iodine-rich groundwater remain unclear. Therefore, we isolated the dissimilatory iodate-reducing bacterium Azonexus hydrophilus strain NCP973 from geogenic high-iodine groundwater of North China Plain.
