The 959 Nematode Genomes (959NG) project aims to generate high-quality reference genomes for nematode species of interest to various research fields from basic biology to ecology and parasitic disease. Rather than the usual "1000 genomes project", we have set an initial target of 959 – a number that celebrates the fact that, due to their lineage-determined developmental programme, all adult C. elegans hermaphrodites have only 959 cells in their bodies. The project is a collaboration between the Tree of Life programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and colleagues at other institutes, including Institut de Biologie de l'École Normale Supérieure, University of Cologne, and New York University.
