More...Until recently, methanogenic archaea were thought to only degrade simple compounds, H2, formate, acetate, and methylated compounds (e.g., methanol, methylamines, and methylsulfides), but recently a species capable of generating methane from coal-derived methoxylated aromatic compounds was discovered. To investigate how this species, Methermicoccus shengliensis (strains AmaM and ZC-1), decomposes such compounds, we performed genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolic, and thermodynamic analyses.
