Early reinfection by Mu and Gamma variants of SARS-CoV-2 in an immunocompetent unvaccinated adult. A case report.
Methodology: The RT-PCR diagnosis of both events was carried out in the Public Health laboratory of Caldas. Whole genome sequencing was performed at the National Institute of Health using Nanopore technology and assembly using the ARTIC-Network protocol.
Results: During the first infection of the patient, VOI Mu was identified. During the second infection, VOC Gamma was identified. The clinical and epidemiological criteria also show that they were independent events and that they occurred during the third epidemiological peak in the country.
Conclusions. It is the first clinical case reported in the world in which reinfection by Mu-Gamma variants is determined, and highlights the importance of genomic surveillance and biological characterization of variants that circulate locally to assess the impact on susceptibility to reinfections.
