The Red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) is a freshwater fish found in South America, including the Amazon. They are famous for their ferocious predator eating behavior that they do in groups when there is starvation, but this is not very common. They communicate acoustically using sonic muscles, usually during aggressive behaviors. This sample was collected by Nidal Karagic, procured by Axel Meyer, sequencing supported by Gene Myers, in collaboration with Richard Durbin, to generate a high-quality reference genome as part of the G10K-VGP and Fish VGP projects.
