The goal of the STREAMCODE project was to acquire preliminary barcode data for the macroplankton (several centimeters down to 200 um) from the Florida Region of the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is a major current carrying millions of gallons of warm seawater from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea up the East Coast of the US. The animals living within this water are important for two primary reasons. First, they are a critical food source for marine communities in the area. Second, the larvae carried within the Stream seed surrounding coastal and deep sea communities that we depend on. This project begins to build a high quality database of the inhabitants of the Gulf Stream which could enable future monitoring projects in this area. It also allows us to identify larval stages of sea floor animals and study distributions of target animals but gaining a better understanding of dispersal potential. This NCBI BioProject contains DNA barcode records that were generated with support from the federally-funded Smithsonian Institution DNA Barcode Network. Funding for collections was provided by Global Genome Initiative, and the Smithsonian Institution ADS Core Grant funded sequencing of other molecular markers. Less...
