The SERCA project (Fish of Chesapeake Bay) is part of the larger Chesapeake Bay Barcode Initiative (CBBI). The CBBI is a major effort to develop barcode libraries of the fish and macroscopic invertebrate species of Chesapeake Bay and surrounding coastal areas. Our collections reach from the bay mouth and adjacent nearshore habitats to the freshwater tidal reaches of Chesapeake tributaries. Within this range, there are over 300 species of fish and roughly 1000 species of macro-invertebrates. To date, we have obtained genetic barcodes for three-quarters of the fish and several hundred invertebrate species, which includes excellent coverage (>80%) for several major invertebrate groups. This NCBI BioProject contains DNA barcode records that were generated with support from the federally-funded Smithsonian Institution DNA Barcode Network. All or portions of the laboratory and/or computer work were conducted in and with the support of the L.A.B. facilities of the NMNH.
