Protocols: Samples were collected at the early exponential growth phase (OD600 ~1) and treated with RNAprotect Bacteria Reagent (QIAGEN, Germany) according to the manufacturer instructions. C. necator H16 ΔmmsA123 ΔphaCAB colonies were used to inoculate tubes containing 5 ml of LB. Each tube was incubated at 30°C overnight with shaking at 200 rpm. Precultures were centrifugated at 8000 rpm for 3 min, washed twice and used to prepare 25 ml of culture at OD600 ~0.1 in a 250 ml baffled flask. 2%SGMM containing 4 g/l (NH4)2SO4 with and without 4 g/l aspartate was used as the culture medium.
