As an apex marine predator, the California sea lion is an important indicator species for the impact of anthropogenic pollution on ocean health. It further serves as a physiological and evolutionary model to study mammalian aquatic adaptation, and contributes to our understanding of the genetic and environmental roles in carcinogenesis. The sample of a male individual was provided by The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California, U.S.A. (Permit #MMPA 18786), and was used to generate a chromosomal level reference assembly as part of the G10K-VGP Project.
