The Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) is the largest member of the pelican family, and one of the world's largest freshwater birds, with wingspans rivaling those of the great albatrosses. Their range spans much of Central Eurasia, from the Mediterranean in the West to the Taiwan Strait in the East, and from the Persian Gulf in the South to Siberia in the North (modified from Wikipedia entry). This sample from a female in the Copenhagen Zoo, in Denmark, was procured by Mads Bertelsen, and coordinated by Tom Gilbert and Erich Jarvis to be used to generate a high-quality reference genome for the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP). Sequencing and genome assembly were conducted at the Vertebrate Genomes Lab (VGL) at the Rockefeller University, led by Olivier Fedrigo and Erich D. Jarvis, with funding support from Gilbert and Jarvis.
