The image depicts a Screening Decision Tree for AEP Prevention, for the purpose of discussing alcohol use with all women of childbearing age, then providing an appropriate screening tool and brief but effective prevention or intervention based on their responses.; The first question is: Have you had any alcohol in the past year? If the answer is No, the screening is concluded and the provider can deliver a universal prevention message (see page 7 of this TIP). If the answer is Yes, the follow-up question is: Are you pregnant?; If the answer to the follow-up question is No, the recommended screening tool is the AUDIT-C, which is validated for use with non-pregnant women and is reproduced in Appendix B of the TIP. If the screening is positive, the Decision Tree recommends a Selective intervention and then treatment or referral. If the screening is negative, the Decision Tree recommends a Universal prevention message (see page 7 of this TIP).; If the answer to the follow-up question is Yes, the recommended screening tool is the T-ACE, the TWEAK, or the CRAFFT Interview, all of which appear in Appendix B. The T-ACE and the TWEAK are validated for use with pregnant women. The CRAFFT Interview may be more helpful when assisting adolescent clients. If the screening is positive, the Decision Tree recommends an Indicated intervention and then treatment or referral. If the screening is negative, the Decision Tree recommends a Selective intervention and then treatment or referral.; Indicated and Selective interventions are discussed on pages 8 through 11 of this TIP. Referral is discussed on pages 11 through 15.

Figure 1.2A Screening Decision Tree for AEP Prevention

AEP prevention can be simple and brief. The TIP consensus panel developed the following Screening Decision Tree for AEP Prevention to help behavioral health providers quickly touch upon the topic of alcohol use with all women of childbearing age, and then provide brief but effective prevention or intervention.

* The T-ACE and TWEAK are validated for use with pregnant women. The CRAFFT Interview may be more helpful when assisting adolescent clients. The AUDIT-C is validated for use with non-pregnant women. All of these instruments are reprinted in Appendix B of this TIP.
