ArsS in Helicobacter pylori is a sensor histidine kinase participating in a two-component system that controls the response to acid conditiions encountered during the process of gastric colonization. This HMM identified ArsS itself but also a broader collection of apparent orthologs from closely related non-gastric colonizers such as Helicobacter hepaticus, Campylobacter jejuni and Wolinella succinogenes. See BlastRule NBR014349 for specific identification of ArsS itself, distinguished by a signature His residue that becomes protonated at low pH.
