This creates a nonoverlapping upstream ORF (uORF) with a very strong Kozak signal that could encode a protein of 46 aa. Although the Kozak signal of the original ORF also has a strong Kozak signal, the signal for the uORF is stronger and is likely to prevent translation from the original ORF. Therefore, this transcript is a candidate for nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) and is not likely to encode a protein.
