    1. The cell wall peptidoglycan hydrolase gene lytE is required for competence development in Bacillus subtilis.
      Title: Deletion of the cell wall peptidoglycan hydrolase gene cwlO or lytE severely impairs transformation efficiency in Bacillus subtilis.
    2. These findings suggest that teichoic acid polymers control lateral peptidoglycan hydrolysis by LytE, and bacteria drastically change their cell wall content to adapt to their environment.

    3. Endopeptidase activity of LytE or CwlO is essential for cell proliferation. These results strongly suggest that LytE and CwlO are involved in cell elongation and support the inside-to-outside model for peptidoglycan sacculus formation.
