    What's a GeneRIF?
    1. HIV-1 hydrophobic antisense protein (ASP) shows polarized subnuclear distribution, preferentially in areas with low content of suppressive epigenetic marks. ASP is an integral protein of the plasma membranes of chronically infected cells stimulated with PMA, and upon viral budding, ASP becomes a structural protein of the HIV-1 envelope.

    2. Results show that multimerization of ASP and induced autophagy partly involve its amino end. ASP from various HIV-1 clades all induced autophagy, as determined by LC3-II levels and p62 degradation, although clade A ASP was less efficient. ASP co-localized and interacted with p62 through its PB1 domain supporting the idea that ASP is ubiquitinated, further contributing to its targeting toward degradation pathways.
