Increased oxidation of PKGIalpha to its disulfide-activated state found in pulmonary arteries from mice with hypoxic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PH) or lungs from patients. It caused by chronic hypoxia, and it limits progression of PH by pulmonary vasodilation that counters and offsets maladaptive vasoconstriction, and also disulfide PKGIalpha is protective by preventing maladaptive growth and fibrosis signaling.

Oxidation of PKGIα mediates an endogenous adaptation to pulmonary hypertension.

redox-mediated guidance required PKG1 and consequently, its deficiency in vivo resulted in defective repair and enhanced neuropathic pain after nerve injury. PKG1-dependent repair functions will outweigh its signaling functions in spinal nociceptive LTP, so that inhibition of PKG1 is no option for neuropathic pain.
