we demonstrate that administration of IPA modulates the microbiota composition in the gut and inhibits microbial dysbiosis in rats fed a high-fat diet. IPA induces the expression of tight junction proteins, such as ZO-1 and Occludin, and maintains intestinal epithelium homeostasis, leading to a reduction in plasma endotoxin levels.

Indole-3-propionic acid inhibits gut dysbiosis and endotoxin leakage to attenuate steatohepatitis in rats.

Study, found that the stimulation of alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor but not alpha4beta2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor decreased sodium-fluorescein permeability and increased cell transendothelial electrical resistance in rat brain endothelial cells (RBEC) monolayers and increased the protein levels of claudin-5 and occludin in RBECs.

Activation of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor upregulates blood-brain barrier function through increased claudin-5 and occludin expression in rat brain endothelial cells.

We provide quantitative evidence that claudin-11 contributes significantly to Sertoli cell tight junction function in vitro. Interestingly, occludin, which is hormonally regulated but not implicated in infertility until late adulthood, is also a significant contributor to barrier function.
