Ma's night monkey (
Aotus nancymaae) is an arboreal, fruit-eating, nocturnal, New World monkey that inhabits a wide diversity of forest types in northern Peru and western Brazil. Ma's night monkey supplements its diet with flowers, insects, nectar and leaves. The night monkeys of the genus Aotus are also called owl monkeys or douroucouli's. Due
More...to their nocturnal habit, the biology of night monkeys is poorly known and the taxonomy of the genus Aotus will likely be further refined as the genetic histories of the local populations become better known. Aotus nancymaae (or Aotus nancymai) was, like all other night monkeys, formerly treated as a subspecies of Aotus trivirgatus. The evolutionary relationships between night monkeys and other New World monkeys has been the subject of a long and contentious debate in primatology. Species of the genus Aotus are important to malaria research as they are variably susceptible to both Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax.
