Mannheimia haemolytica. This organism is related to Pasteurella maltocida and affects the cattle industry by causing major respiratory infections in feedlot cattle and other ruminants. The result is the loss of over a billion dollars to the cattle industry each year as the organism can infect up to one percent of feedlot animals, More...with an increase in morbidity, but also a decrease in weight gain. One of the major virulence factors is leukotoxin, which binds to ruminant leukocytes, inserting a pore into the membrane, and inducing necrosis and cell death. Other virulence factors including lipopolysaccharide, an endotoxin, and capsular polysaccharide, which aids in evasion of host immune defenses.
