How to: Find published information on a gene or sequence

Starting with...

A GENE NAME, GENE PRODUCT NAME, GENE SYMBOL, OR NCBI SEQUENCE ACCESSION NUMBER

  1. Search the PubMed database of biomedical literature with the gene name, symbol or sequence accession number. Often more relevant result may be found by searching the Gene database as described below.
  2. Search the Gene database with the gene name, symbol or sequence accession number. If you know the gene symbol and species, enter them as follows: tpo[sym] AND human[orgn]
  3. Click on the desired gene.
  4. Follow the link to PubMed from the Gene record links menu.
  5. If there is no Gene record for this gene and organism, perform an All databases search with the gene name, product name, symbol, or accession number. For names, include the organism in the search to find the most relevant results, for example: Cytochrome c AND bullfrog[orgn] AND mrna[filter].
  6. Click on the result for the relevant database (Nucleotide, EST, GSS, Protein).
  7. Follow the link to PubMed from the within the displayed sequence record in the REFERENCES or the PubMed link from the Links menu.

A NUCLEOTIDE OR PROTEIN SEQUENCE

  1. Use the NCBI BLAST service to perform a similarity search.
  2. For a nucleotide sequence select nucleotide blast from the Basic BLAST section of the BLAST home page. For a protein sequence, select the protein blast service.
  3. Select the BLAST database that is most likely to contain the sequence of interest. See the BLAST help documentation to see a description of the BLAST databases.
  4. Click the BLAST button to run the search and identify matching sequences.
  5. Click on the linked accession number in the results to retrieve the sequence record.
  6. Follow the links in the section, "Articles about the ... gene" or the link "PubMed (Weighted)" in the section, "All links from this record."
