Definition

Presence of biliary sludge (a mixture of particulate solids that have precipitated from bile) in the gallbladder. Such sediment consists of cholesterol crystals, calcium bilirubinate pigment, and other calcium salts. Sludge is usually detected on transabdominal ultrasonography. [from HPO]
