small membrane protein YmiC
YmiC is an uncharacterized predicted protein about 32 amino acids long, hypothesized to be real and a membrane protein based on conservation across multiple gammaproteobacteria with constant length and constant hydrophobic character suggesting insertion into membrane. Expression was verified for a construct with an added C-terminal epitope. Homologs tend to show a pattern of conservative amino acid substitutions. Thus, comparative genomics also suggests YmiC is a real protein. An usual feature is three perfectly invariant Trp residues, and a highly conserved fourth, in a stretch of 19 residues.
