30S ribosomal protein S15
30S ribosomal protein S15 binds the central domain of 16S rRNA and is required for the assembly of the ribosomal small subunit.
Primary rRNA binding protein; helps nucleate assembly of 30S; binds directly to the 16S rRNA and an intersubunit bridge to the 23S rRNA; autoregulates translation through interactions with the mRNA leader sequence. This model is built to recognize specifically bacterial, chloroplast, and mitochondrial ribosomal protein S15. The homologous proteins of Archaea and Eukarya are designated S13.
