The purpose of this overview is to increase the awareness of clinicians regarding the genetics of Parkinson disease and related genetic counseling issues.

The following are the goals of this overview.

Goal 1: Describe the clinical characteristics of Parkinson disease.

Goal 2: Review the causes of Parkinson disease.

Goal 3: Provide an evaluation strategy to identify the genetic cause of Parkinson disease in a proband.

Goal 4: Inform genetic counseling for family members of an individual with Parkinson disease.

Goal 5: Provide information on targeted therapeutic clinical trials.
