SRX18924517: An Enduring Enemy: A Comprehensive Phylogeny and the Evolution of Host Use in Mosquitoes
1 ILLUMINA (Illumina HiSeq 2500) run: 8.1M spots, 1G bases, 415.4Mb downloads

Design: The sequences were obtained by Anchored Hybrid Enrichment, an exon capture method where fragmented genomic DNA extracts for each fly species are hybridized to a custom set of tiled oligonucleotide probes designed to match orthologous exons in the Diptera genome. Hybridized fragments are isolated by magnetic beads and a library is constructed. sequencing of pooled libraries is carried out on Illumina MySeq or HighSeq sequencers using single-read in the NCSU Genomic Sequencing Laboratory. Reads are demultiplexed, trimmed, and assembled using Trinitity or Spades software.

Study: An Enduring Enemy: Phylogenomics Reveals the History of Host Use in Mosquitoes
show Abstracthide Abstract
This paper reports the largest and most completely resolved phylogenetic tree for mosquitoes ever proposed. Using the framework of relationships supported by data from phylogenomic sampling, we conducted macroevolutionary tests to demonstrate that the origin and diversification of mosquito lineages was broadly contemporaneous with their hosts and was influenced by major geologic events. Several distinct lineages of mosquitoes are together among the most important disease vectors on earth and our results show that prior to their impact on human health, and throughout earth history, mosquitoes experienced multiple periods of diversification and host expansion.
