show Abstracthide AbstractProtobothrops mucrosquamatus is distributed broadly throughout Asia, the Taiwan habu is an invasive species in Okinawa, Japan. Locally abundant in the invasive range, this species can serve as a model system for snake evolution and physiology. The Sakishima habu Protobothrops elegans is endemic to the Yaeyama Islands in southern Japan, and has an introduced population in Okinawa, Japan. It is a sister species to the Taiwan Habu otobothrops mucrosquamatus. This project aims to re-sequence the genome of P. elegans as part of a population genomic study of P. mucrosquamatus venom evolution and to understand the regulation of the venom gland transcriptome.
