As a step toward characterizing glyphosate resistance evolution in I. purpurea, we report on investigations of the result of artificial selection for resistance and the potential genetic mechanism of glyphosate resistance in this species. We do so by performing two generations of artificial selection for increased and decreased resistance followed by progeny resistance assays in the greenhouse. We then identify the most and least glyphosate resistant families from these experiments and perform RNA-seq to determine what genes may be differentially transcribed between resistant and susceptible lines. Specifically, we ask the following: does I. purpurea respond to artificial selection for increased and decreased glyphosate resistance? Which genes are differentially expressed in glyphosate resistant and susceptible I. purpurea? How does gene expression differ in response to glyphosate in resistant and susceptible lines of I. purpurea?
