SRX4406630: RNA-Seq of arctic ground squirrel: adult male skeletal muscle
1 ILLUMINA (Illumina HiSeq 4000) run: 20.3M spots, 4.1G bases, 1.3Gb downloads

Design: Poly-A RNA was isolated from total RNA and chemically fragmented. First and second strand synthesis was followed by end repair, and adenosines was added to the 3' ends. Adapters were ligated to the cDNA and 200 25 bp fragments were gel purified and enriched by PCR. Then the cDNA was run on the Illumina HiSeq 4000 Sequencer.

Study: Muscle atrophy, osteoporosis prevention in hibernating mammals
show Abstracthide Abstract
Physical inactivity decreases the mechanical load on the skeleton, which when prolonged leads to losses of muscle strength and bone mass in humans and most mammalian species. Hibernating mammals show no loss in bone mass and less muscle atrophy than would be anticipated over such a prolonged period of physical inactivity. This suggests that diverse hibernating mammals have evolved natural mechanisms that reduce muscle atrophy and conserve bone mass.
