We have observed increasing tolerance to alcohols among strains of the hospital pathogen Enterococcus faecium. This changing phenotype coincided with the introduction of alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHR), raising the possibility that ABHR might be driving the emergence of highly persistent Enterococcus faecium.
