Study: This study aimed to perform a genomic and epidemiology analysis on Legionella isolates to determine species and strain distribution in hospital environment according to isolation date, treatment employed to eradicate the bacteria, and place of isolation. We sequenced the whole genome of 101 isolates of Legionella pneumophila and 12 Legionella rubrilucens.
show Abstracthide Abstract
Legionella pneumophila is an intracelullar bacteria that is able to behave as free-living or associated to biofilm in nature or in man-made water systems. Through contaminated water droplets, the bacteria can go inside the human body and can cause two types of legionelosis: Pontiac fever and Legionnaires disease. By sequencing isolates from Legionella from routine surveillance from two hospitals in Spain from 2011 through 2017, we were able to perform an epidemiology and genomic analysis an determined the species and strains distribution according to isolation date, treatment to eradicate the bacteria and place of isolation.
