    Summary
    The protein encoded by this gene belongs to a subfamily of selenoprotein L (SelL), within a superfamily of thioredoxin (Trx). SelL is unusual in that it has restricted phylogenetic distribution in aquatic organisms; in vertebrates, it is found only in fish, but not in mammals, birds or amphibians. SelL proteins possess a thioredoxin-like fold, where the UxxU (U for selenocysteine) motif replaces the catalytic CxxC (C for cysteine) motif in thioredoxins, suggesting a redox function for this protein family. Unlike majority of selenoproteins, selenoprotein L contains two selenocysteine (Sec) residues encoded by UGA codons, that normally signal translation termination. The 3' UTRs of selenoprotein mRNAs in vertebrates contain a conserved stem-loop structure, designated the Sec insertion sequence (SECIS) element, that is necessary for the recognition of UGA as a Sec codon, rather than as a stop signal.
