Title Measuring the effect of deoxycholate on Bacteroides fragilis gene expression

Summary We used RNAseq as an approach to assess the B. fragilis strain p207 response to the bile salt, deoxycholic acid (DC). A 6min DC exposure dramatically remodeled the transcriptome with approximately 20% of transcripts exhibiting significant changes. Chaperones and efflux systems were among the most highly induced genes, while protein synthesis genes were strongly repressed by DC.
 
Overall design RNA-seq data were collected on triplicate samples of B. fragilis RNA from: 1) cells not exposed to deoxycholate (DC), 2) cells exposed to 0.01% DC for 6 minutes, and 3) cells exposed to 0.01% DC for 20 minutes.
