Tissue was dispase-treated to isolate epidermis.Single epidermal cells, obtained by rapid trypsin treatment and mechanical dissociation, were sorted for expression of alpha-6 integrin and CD133 and RNA extracted for gene array analyses.

13 week human fetal scalp tissue was obtained from 1st trimester abortions in conformity with federal and state laws and following National Institute of Health Human Fetal Tissue Research Review Panel of 1988 guidelines. 13 week gestation was defined based upon observance of hair follicle placodes and buds but not external hair shafts.
