A 5 mm stainless steel bead was placed together with tissue (max 30 mg/tube) in 2 ml of RTL buffer (Qiagen) with 1% β-mercaptoethanol and homogenized twice for 2 min at 25 Hz. RNA was purified using the RNeasy® Mini Kit (Qiagen) and eluted in 20 µl RNase-free water.

| Hybridization protocol |
Following fragmentation, cRNA were hybridized, washed and stained according to the standard Affymetrix protocol. Washed and stained with phycoerytrin conjugated streptavidin using the Affymetrix Fluidics Station 450.

GeneChips were scanned in the Affymetrix GeneArray 3000 7G scanner. Cell intensity files were generated in the GeneChip Command Console Software (AGCC; Affymetrix).
