Treatment protocol Liver was harvested between 8:30 and 11:00 from rats treated by gavage with a single 100 µg/kg dose of TCDD or with corn oil vehicle for 3 or 19 h.
Growth protocol Two dioxin-sensitive rat strains/lines, L-E and LnC (which express wildtype AHR), and two dioxin-resistant rat strains/lines, H/W and LnA, (that have a deletion in the AHR transactivation domain, (Pohjanvirta et al., 1998)) were from breeding colonies of the National Public Health Institute, Division of Environmental Health, Kuopio, Finland. All animals were males 10-12 weeks old.
Extracted molecule total RNA
Extraction protocol Total RNA was extracted using Qiagen RNeasy kits according to the manufacturer's instructions (Qiagen, Mississauga, Canada). Total RNA yield was quantified by UV spectrophotometry and RNA integrity was verified using an Agilent 2100 Bioanalyser (Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA).

Data processing Array data were loaded into the R statistical environment (v2.3.1) using the affy package (v1.10.0) of the BioConductor open-source library (Gentleman et al., 2004). The array data were pre-processed with the GCRMA algorithm (v2.4.1, (Irizarry et al., 2003)).
