Muscle biopsies of (5 × 5 × 5 mm) 125 mm3 were obtained from vastus medialis immediately after performing the surgical approach for primary total knee arthroplasty and exactly 60 min later.

Muscle homogenates were obtained using BioMasherII Kible. Muscle extracts were prepared using RNeasy Plus Universal Mini Kit Qiagen.

The data were analyzed with a commercial software called JMP Genomics, version 6, from SAS. Gene expression profiling was performed using arrays of human HTA-2_0-type from Affymetrix. A Custom CDF Version 20 with Entrez based gene definitions was used to annotate the arrays.
