20 ml of whole blood from each participant were collected in EDTA tubes. Blood samples were left at 4ºC until plasma separation and plasma was frozen within 6 h of the blood draw. Briefly, samples were centrifuged at 1,600 x g for 10 min at 4 ºC to spin down blood cells, and plasma was transferred into new tubes, followed by further centrifugation at 16,000 x g for 10 minutes at 4ºC to completely remove cellular components. Plasma was then aliquoted and stored at -80°C until use.
