Definition

Needle-like or slit-like clefts within the interior space of peritubular capillaries located in the cortex of the kidney. Cholesterol emboli are visualized as clear spaces (cholesterol clefts) where the cholesterol crystals have been dissolved by routine processing. Acute lesions can be accompanied by inflammation and fibrin. [from HPO]
