Definition

Hordeola interna are acute purulent infections affecting the meibomian sebacious glands, often caused by staphylococcus infections. In contrast to chalazia (chronic epithelioid cell granulomatous inflammation of the meibomian gland caused by inflammation of a blocked meibomian gland), hordeola are extremely painfull and can cause extreme local swelling. [from HPO]
