Treatment protocol Spikelets were emasculated and pollinated at the heading stage to ensure sufficient and developmentally coordinated F1 seed production for embryo and endosperm isolation.
Growth protocol Wheat plants were grown in growth chambers under long-day conditions of 16 h of light, 22°C and 8 h of dark, 20°C, with light intensity of 100 to 120 μmol m−2 s−1 (Philips high-output F54T5/835-841 bulbs) for the whole life cycle.

Extraction protocol Total RNA from crowns were extracted using a Plant RNA Isolation Mini Kit (Agilent Technologies, Mississauga, ON).
