Treatment protocol A cohabitation challenge test started when 20% of IPN-infected challenger fish were added to the experimental tank. Challenger fish were previously marked by a fin clip and injected with 5 ml of ~3 x 106 TCID50/ml of IPNV.
Growth protocol Salmon (average weight 100g) were kept in tanks with seawater.

Extraction protocol RNA was isolated using the iPrep™ TRIzol® Plus kit (Invitrogen), and purified with PureLink RNA mini kits.
