Impact of modeled microgravity stress on innate immunity in a beneficial animal-microbe symbiosis

(Submitter supplied) The innate immune response is the first line of defense for all animals to not only detect invading microbes and toxins but also sense and interface with the environment. One such environment that can significantly affect innate immunity is spaceflight. In this study, we explored the impact of microgravity stress on key elements of the NFκB innate immune pathway. The symbiosis between the bobtail squid Euprymna scolopes and its beneficial symbiont Vibrio fischeri was used as a model system under a simulated microgravity environment. more...

Emergence of novel cephalopod gene regulation and expression through large-scale genome reorganization

(Submitter supplied) Coleoid cephalopods (squids, cuttlefish, octopus) have the largest nervous system among invertebrates that together with many lineage-specific morphological traits enables complex behaviors. The genomic basis underlying these innovations remains unknown. Using comparative and functional genomics in the model squid Euprymna scolopes, we reveal the unique genomic, topological, and regulatory organization of cephalopod genomes. more...

Colonization, luminescence, and autoinducer effects on host transcription during development of squid-vibrio association

(Submitter supplied) The light-organ symbiosis between the squid Euprymna scolopes and the luminous bacterium Vibrio fischeri offers the opportunity to decipher the hour-by-hour events that occur during the natural colonization of an animal's epithelial surface by its microbial partners. To determine the genetic basis of these events, a glass-slide microarray was used to characterize the light-organ transcriptome of juvenile squid in response to the initiation of symbiosis. more...

UI Squid EST 30K cDNA array

(Submitter supplied) Glass slide with 30,005 spots (13,978 unique cDNA clone inserts) in 48 blocks consisting of 25 columns and 25 rows. Blocks are arranged in 12 rows and 4 columns. The set of 13,978 cDNA clone inserts was identified form the University of Iowa EST collection. The clone inserts were amplified with T7 and T3 primers and printed with 50% DMSO on UltraGaps slides (Corning) using a ProSys 5510 Microarray Printer. more...
