Gene expression changes in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells after 3 diet interventions, TMD enriched with olive oil, TMD enriched with nuts and Low fat diet.

(Submitter supplied) Despite the benefits associated with healthy diets, data on the mechanisms by which these benefits are promoted are scarce. Our aim was to explore the global transcriptomic response of biological pathways related to cardiovascular disease associated with traditional Mediterranean diet (TMD) intervention. The PREDIMED study is a large on-going, parallel, multicentre, randomised, controlled trial aimed at assessing the TMD effect on primary cardiovascular prevention. more...

DNA methylation in PREDIMED-Navarra participants

(Submitter supplied) Genome wide DNA methylation from peripheral white blood cells (PWBCs) from individuals enrolled in PREDIMED trial. The objective was to analyse whether an intervention with two Mediterranean diets, one rich in extra-virgin olive oil (MedDiet+EVOO) and the other one in nuts (MedDiet+nuts), was influencing the methylation status of PWBC genes. A group with a low-fat diet was considered as control. The Illumina Infinium 420k Human DNA methylation Beadchip was used to obtain DNA methylation profiles across approximately 450,000 CpGs in these samples. more...

Human in vivo nutrigenomic effect of olive oil

(Submitter supplied) Olive oil is protective against risk factors for cardiovascular and cancer diseases. A nutrigenomic approach was performed to assess whether olive oil, the main fat of the Mediterranean diet modifies the gene expression in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Six healthy male volunteers ingested, at fasting state, 50 ml of olive oil, and continued with the same olive oil as a source of raw fat (25ml/day) during 3 weeks. more...

Sustained olive oil consumption effect on peripheral blood mononuclear cells

Analysis of PBMCs from healthy males after 3 weeks of virgin olive oil (VOO) consumption at doses common in the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet protects against cardiovascular diseases. Results provide insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial action of VOO.

Gene expression changes in PBMCs from metabolic syndrome patients after acute intake of phenol-rich virgin olive oil

(Submitter supplied) Some studies have shown that acute intake of high-phenol virgin olive oil reduces pro-inflammatory, pro-oxidant and pro-thrombotic states, but nowadays still remains unclear if those effects attributed to its phenolic fraction could be exerted at transcriptional level in vivo. Two virgin olive oil-based breakfasts with high (398 ppm) and low (70 ppm) content of phenolic compounds were administered to twenty patients (9 men and 11 women) with metabolic syndrome following a double-blinded random crossover design. more...

Fat_challenge_tests

(Submitter supplied) Exploration of new markers that define impaired metabolic flexibility using an acute postprandial challenge test. Healthy subjects underwent a 4-week high-fat high-calorie diet. High-fat challenges were performed in these subjects before and after the diet and in subjects with the metabolic syndrome.
