Integration of developmental and nutritional cues determines timing of female flower opening in cucumber

(Submitter supplied) The timing of flower opening is essential for pollination and thus seed production. Despite flower opening has been a long lasting topic for plant biologists, the underling molecular mechansim remains elusive. Here we used a unique cucumber line ‘6457’ that spontaneously produces super ovary with delayed corolla opening as material, and explored the physiological, cytological, nutritional and transcriptomic reasons for the delayed corolla opening in super ovary. more...

Cucumber ovaries inhibited by dominant fruits still respond to pollination but display distinct metabolome and transcriptome profiles

(Submitter supplied) Cucurbits represent an attractive model to explore the dynamics of fruit set. Here we set out to characterize first fruit inhibition (FFI), i.e. the inhibitory effect of the first fruits on subsequent development of younger ovaries during pollination induced fruit set. After the first fertilized ovaries set fruit, younger ovaries fertilized above them on the main stem remained in a temporary state of inhibition. more...

Real-time quantitative PCR analysis of cucumber mitogen activated protein kinase cascade genes in various tissues

(Submitter supplied) We used Bio-Rad laboratories, lnc. PCR assay panel to analyze expression levels of MAPK genes in various tissues or organs. Cucumber plants of the ‘Jinyan No.4’ cultivar were reared in growth chambers at 28 ± 1 °C with a photoperiod of 16 h light/8 h dark and light intensity of 400 μmol m−2 s−1. The roots, leaves, stems, female flower buds (approximately 3 d before anthesis), male flower buds (approximately 1.0 cm in length), and fruits (10 d after pollination) were collected from flowering plants for tissue expression analysis.

Real-time quantitative PCR analysis of cucumber mitogen activated protein kinase cascade genes under various stress conditions and plant hormone treatments

(Submitter supplied) We used Bio-Rad laboratories, lnc. PCR assay panel to analyze expression levels of MAPK genes under various stress conditions and plant hormone treatments. Cucumber plants of the ‘Jinyan No.4’ cultivar were reared in growth chambers at 28 ± 1 °C with a photoperiod of 16 h light/8 h dark and light intensity of 400 μmol m−2 s−1. Three-week-old seedlings were used for all abiotic and biotic treatments. more...

Phloem-specific transcriptome profiling links gene expression, physiological characterization with phloem function in the pedicle and fruit of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)

(Submitter supplied) Phloem is essential for higher plant development and survival by transporting photosynthetic products and systemic signals from source to sink organs. To date, most phloem studies were performed with the phloem exudate for physiological, transcriptomic or proteomic analyses. However, as yet, no transcriptomic profiling was performed to the phloem tissue itself, probably due to the technique difficulties to access the phloem tissue inside the plant body. more...

Next Generation Sequencing Facilitates Quantitative Analysis of Wild Type and IFC (incompletely fused carpels) Maize Ovary Transcriptomes

Analysis of transcriptome sequences from two flower types of C. vulgaris

(Submitter supplied) The production of heather (Calluna vulgaris) in Germany is highly dependent on cultivars with mutated flower morphology, the so-called diplocalyx bud bloomers. So far, this unique flower type of C. vulgaris has not been reported in any other plant species. The flowers are characterised by an extremely extended flower attractiveness, since the flower buds remain closed throughout the complete flowering season. more...
