Post-menopausal women: vaginal epithelium

Analysis of vaginal epithelium of postmenopausal women with vaginal dryness. Vaginal dryness and atrophy are associated with menopausal estrogen depletion. Results provide insight into molecular mechanisms underlying vaginal atrophy.

Vaginal epithelial gene expression in postmenopausal women suffering from vaginal dryness

(Submitter supplied) The onset of menopause is accompanied by a dramatic increase in reported symptoms of vaginal dryness, soreness, irritation or itching, pain with intercourse and bleeding after intercourse. Collectively these affect 25-50% of women of post-menopausal age and significantly impact their quality of life. To examine how gene expression differs between these groups, surface vaginal epithelial cells were collected from postmenopausal women suffering from vaginal dryness and appropriate controls not suffering from dryness. more...

Effect of bacterial vaginosis, Lactobacillus and Premarin estrogen replacement therapy on vaginal gene expression changes.

(Submitter supplied) The aim of the study was to investigate gene expression profiles of post-menopausal women receiving Premarin estrogen replacement therapy (ERT), compared to controls and to examine any correlations between the bacterial vaginosis (BV) status of the stubjects. This is the first study to use gene arrays to correlate changes in host expression to ERT and BV.
