CD133-positive and CD133-negative colon cancer cells

Analysis of CD133-positive and CD133-negative colorectal cancer cells and CAFs isolated from the same stage II patient specimen. CD133+ colon cancer cells exhibit enhanced tumorigenicity over CD133- cells. Results provide insight into molecular basis of the enhanced tumorigenicity of CD133+ cells.

CD133+ colon cancer cells are more interactive with the tumor microenvironment than CD133- cells

(Submitter supplied) CD133-positive colorectal cancer cells exhibit enhanced tumorigenicity over CD133-negative cells. The CD133+ cells are more interactive with and responsive to their stromal microenvironment because they also express the cognate receptors, such as CXCR4, for ligands produced by their neighboring carcinoma-associated fibroblasts, such as SDF-1 (stromal-derived growth factor).

Characterization of colon cancer cells: a functional approach characterizing CD133 as a potential stem cell marker

(Submitter supplied) Background: Isolation and characterization of tumourigenic colon cancer initiating cells may help to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Methods: We characterized a panel of fourteen human colon carcinoma cell lines and their corresponding xenografts for the surface expression of different potential stem cell markers: CD133, CD24, CD44, CDCP1 and CXCR4. In five cell lines and nine xenografts mRNA expression of the investigated markers was determined. more...

The disparate twins: A comparative study of CXCR4 and CXCR7 in SDF-1α-induced gene expression, invasion and chemosensitivity of colon cancer

(Submitter supplied) In colorectal cancer, increased expression of the CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) has been shown to provoke metastatic disease due to the interaction with its ligand stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1). Recently, a second SDF-1 receptor, CXCR7, was found to enhance tumor growth in solid tumors. Albeit signaling cascades via SDF-1/CXCR4 have been intensively studied, the significance of the SDF-1/CXCR7-induced intracellular communication triggering malignancy is still only marginally understood. more...
