A coordinated attack by a bacterial secretion system and a small molecule drives prey specificity

(Submitter supplied) Vibrio species are recognized for their role in food- and water-borne diseases in humans, fish, and aquatic invertebrates. We screened bacterial strains isolated from raw food shrimp for those that are bactericidal to Vibrio strains. Here we identify and characterize Aeromonas dhakensis strain A603 which shows robust bactericidal activity specifically towards Vibrio and related taxa but less potency toward other Gram-negative species. more...

A mucin-regulated adhesin determines the spatial organization and inflammatory character of a bacterial symbiont in the vertebrate gut

(Submitter supplied) In a healthy gut, microbes are often aggregated with host mucus, yet the molecular basis for this organization and its impact on intestinal health are unclear. Mucus is a viscous physical barrier separating resident microbes from epithelia, but also provides glycan cues that regulate microbial behaviors. Here, we describe a mucin-sensing pathway in an Aeromonas symbiont of zebrafish, Aer01. In response to the mucin-associated glycan N-acetylglucosamine, a sensor kinase regulates expression of an aggregation-promoting adhesin we named MbpA. more...

A flavonoid-attracted Aeromonas spp enhances plant Na_H1 resistance without cry-for-help [Bacteria_RNA-seq]

(Submitter supplied) Flavonoids are stress-inducible metabolites important for plant-microbe interactions. In contrast to their well-known function in initiating rhizobia nodulation in legumes, it is unclear whether and how flavonoids may contribute to plant stress resistance through affecting non-nodulating bacteria in the root microbiome. Here we show how flavonoids preferentially attracts Aeromonadaceae in Arabidopsis thaliana root microbiome and how flavonoid-dependent recruitment of an Aeromona spp. more...

RNA-sequencing of smpB-dependent gene expression in A. Veronii C4

(Submitter supplied) We generated A. veronii strains that express SmpB(wt) or not(△smpB) in trans to evaluate the changes in gene expression upon SmpB expression. As SmpB participate in transtranslation sysytem, this allows us to explore the gene regulaton in A.veronii.

Investigation into the Physiologies of Aeromonas veronii in vitro and Inside the Digestive-Tract of the Medicinal Leech using RNA-seq

(Submitter supplied) In this study we used Illumina RNA-seq to identify genes expressed by A. veronii in mid-log phase growth in a rich medium and within the digestive tract of the medicinal leech. Our results shed light on the physiology of A. veronii during colonization of the leech gut.

AsalChip2 (NRC-IBS Aeromonas salmonicida A449)

(Submitter supplied) PCR primers were designed for 4293 ORFs from the completed genomic sequence of Aeromonas salmonicida A449 which comprises 4413 ORFs on one chromosome and two large plasmids. Good amplicons of length greater than 160 nt were obtained for 4237 ORFs representing >95% coverage of ORFs. All amplicons are spotted in duplicate on the microarray and sheared total genomic DNA from A. salmonicida and salmon DNA were spotted in the corners of each subarray as controls. more...
